Coaxial lighting lets you photograph shiny, reflective subjects with even, shadow-free light and no glare. Inside the Aksen 17.5mm Coaxial Version, a beam splitter directs this light straight down the optical axis, so it reaches the subject from the same direction the lens is looking. Rather than bouncing back as hotspots, the light reveals what’s really there: scratches, engravings, dents and fine surface texture.

It’s ideal for flat, polished subjects such as coins, circuit boards, microchips and watch parts, and can be combined with conventional or polarised lighting for more creative results.

The light fits into the Ø8mm Coaxial Light Adapter that ships with the Aksen 17.5mm Coaxial Version. The adapter screws onto the coaxial port and holds the light securely in place. It runs from a USB-A power source such as a USB charger or power bank, and the in-line dimmer lets you set the brightness or switch the light off without touching the lens.

Without a coaxial light, the lens’s coaxial port goes unused. At a fraction of the lens’s price, this light is what unlocks its most distinctive feature.
